Heidi Joy Tretheway is a sucker for campfires, craft cocktails, and steamy romance in books and real life. She sings along with musicals (badly), craves French carbs, and buys plane tickets the way some women buy shoes.
Her first career as a journalist took Heidi behind the scenes with politicians, rock stars, chefs, and detectives, all of whom inspire her stories.
What defines your books?
I love strong, feisty women—they’re at the core of every story I write. I swoon for whip-smart dialogue (I’d love to channel Aaron Sorkin’s lines from The West Wing) and sexual tension that builds to steamy, emotional love scenes that push the boundaries of a few delicious taboos.
What about you makes people laugh?
I have terrible taste in music. I like making silly videos with my kids about frog racing and how to make cheesecake. My favorite socks (picked out by my then-4-year-old daughter) are pink with cupcakes, unicorns and robots on them.
What are you drinking?
A Nutella latte in the morning is my guilty pleasure. If I’m up for a recreational beverage, I’ll order a Moscow Mule, an Old Fashioned, or a mojito.
When did you start writing?
I’ve always been a working writer, including years in journalism, marketing and communications. I published my first book, a fairy tale for my daughter, on 12/12/12. Publishing is addictive.
This or that…?
I like crunchy more than creamy, white more than red, pie more than cake, sleeping in more than seizing the day, movies more than TV, brunch more than any other meal, and October more than any other month. I read 99% of books on my Kindle but I always cry over my first paperback proofs. I’m more likely to pack light than be prepared, to order something I’ve never tried rather than a favorite dish, and to tell you something totally inappropriate rather than hold my tongue.
Go on, tell us something inappropriate.
In college, I auditioned for a British “dating game” TV show and my talent was tying cherry stems in knots with my tongue. Yes, I can actually do that.
Three (not-too-outrageous) wishes?
Plane tickets to Europe, a massage, and a kitten.
